REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION OF BIRTHS OF MEXICAN CHILDREN BORN ABROAD

Mexico’s  Civil Register allows registering persons at the Consulate

that have been born in any country other than Mexico. Children of

Mexican parents or either Mexican father or mother born in

national territory.

 

(Remember that each case is different; you may need more

documents at the day of the appointment)

The process will take place in three phases 

First Phase

Review of documents: Only one person must submit the undermentioned documentation

and fill out the application form, to determine if the person qualifies for registration

1. Original birth certificate(s) (long form)* legible and in good condition

issued by the United States. Of the child(ren) you are going to register

 

The names of the parents of the person to be registered must be identical to their birth certificate

to those on the parents’ birth certificates, otherwise must be corrected with the

Register Officer/County Clerk (Vital Records Office)

of the County in which the person to be registered was born

 

If you need to obtain the Birth Certificate or if you need to correct your children’s Certificates,

Rich out to your nearest Vital Records office.

 

*Long form birth certificate is a copy of the actual registered birth certificate in the town where the birth took place.

2. Submit the original (for each person to be registered) of proof of nationality of the parents

who are Mexican, whoever it may be, as well as their official identification

 

3. Any of the following 4 documents are accepted as proof of Mexican Nationality. It is worth mentioning that 

 

It is mandatory to present the Mexican Birth Certificate of the Mexican father or mother

Note: I only used the documents in blue

– Birth Certificate

– Valid Mexican Passport 

– Certificate of Mexican nationality

– Declaration of Mexican nationality by birth

– High security consular registration, that is, issued after 2005

4. CURRENT official ID with photograph and signature of each parent

(if the mother has a married name, submit a marriage certificate)

The names of the parents of the person to be registered must be identical in their birth certificate to those of the marriage certificates

and the current identification of the parents, otherwise they must be corrected


To correct Marriage Certificates you must go to the office of


Register Officer/County Clerk (Vital Records Office) of the County in which your certificate was obtained

To correct your current official identification (or driver’s license), go to the Department of Motor Vehicles nearer you.

5. Original and two legible copies of the parents’ marriage certificate

(if the parents are married)

In addition to the above documents. I also submitted the following: 

These additional documents  helped me verify the identity of the child(ren)

– Father’s American Passpor

– School ID

 

2. Second Phase

Appointment for registration:

If you meet the requirements in the first phase, they will be given an appointment

to come to sign the final documents and take their fingerprints

People that need to be present:  The interested party and the parents

Note:  Both parents must attend in the Second Phase presenting a valid Identification

 

 

3. Third Phase

Any person may collect the “Certified Copies” of the Birth Certificates by presenting

the “Proof of Registration” and the payment receipt

The process of the registration and the first birth

certificate are FREE 

The cost of additional copies are

$16.00 USD.

Additional Information:

– If the Mexican parent died, you must present the original death certificate 

and an official identification of the deceased, even if it is not current

– If parents are not married or they married after the birth of the person to be registered,

the PARENT MUST APPEAR PERSONALLY OR THROUGH A “SPECIAL POWER OF ATTORNEY”

GIVEN AT A MEXICAN CONSULATE OR IN MEXICO, regardless if the person is under-age or adult.

 

– If the father has passed away and there was NO parent’s marriage or the marriage

was after the birth of the person to be registered, or both parents have passed away the process

will NOT continue at the Consulate.

You should refer to the Civil Register in Mexico. (This is only if the parents were not married)

– If the Mexican parent obtained American citizenship by naturalization, you must bring the

Certificate of Naturalization, that document will be returned.

Foreign parents will verify their nationality with their valid passport

 

IMPORTANT:

-People who were born in Mexico and have never been registered can go to the

Nearest Mexican Consulate during business hours to request information.
